Sisu 3 Potential Addressed By Director After Emotional Road To Revenge Ending

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Sisu: Road to Revenge.Sisu: Road to Revenge director Jalmari Helander addresses whether there will be a third movie after the second film’s emotional ending. Road to Revenge follows a former commando, Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila). He wants to rebuild his family’s home, only to find himself hunted by Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang), a Soviet Red Army officer responsible for killing his family.

By the end of Sisu: Road to Revenge, Aatami kills Igor and avenges the death of his family. In the final moments, Aatami is seen getting to rebuild his home and is aided by members of the local community.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns for the second installment, Helander was asked whether he envisions this as the end of the story or if there will be more of Aatami taking on the Red Army. Helander finds Road of Revenge to be a satisfying and “beautiful” conclusion for Aatami, but acknowledges that the series could continue if he has an idea for a third film. I like to think that this is a very beautiful ending for the story of Aatami Korpi. But at the same time, you never know. Some day I might have an idea for the third one. Let’s see.

Sisu: Road to Revenge‘s reviews have been excellent, leading to an impressive 96% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant‘s Gregory Nussen praises the movie’s action, as “Helander’s ability to effectively stage a brutal action sequence is aces” and compliments the final act for being “amongst the genre’s most electrifying, taut sequences.”

The action-packed sequel is also resonating with audiences, who awarded it an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical and audience scores are on par with the first Sisu movie, released in 2022, with critics giving it a 94% critical score and audiences giving it an 88%.

Both Sisu films have been compared to the John Wick movies, which there are now five of after the spinoff film Ballerina starring Ana de Armas. While Aatami’s story is arguably complete, just like with John Wick, there is potential for the series to continue, especially after the overwhelmingly positive response from viewers.

Helander is not going to create another sequel just for the sake of it, though. With Aatami having defeated Igor and now rebuilding his home alongside others, his story has ended for now in a good place. There would need to be a compelling reason for Aatami to leave this peace behind and once again engage with Sisu‘s ultra-violent action.

Following the U.S. release of Sisu: Road to Revenge, the actor who plays Igor will be starring in another action sequel. Lang reprises his role as the Na’vi version of Miles Quaritch in Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment in James Cameron’s lucrative science-fiction and action franchise, which comes to theaters on December 19.
