Smart Africa, Nigeria to collaborate on digital infrastructure

Smart Africa’s Director-General, Lacina Koné, has revealed plans for a strategic collaboration with Nigeria in the enhancement of the country’s digital infrastructure and empowering its citizens.

In an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, Koné outlined the vision behind Smart Africa’s partnership, emphasising the importance of bridging the digital divide and fostering inclusive growth across the continent.

Smart Africa sees Nigeria as a pivotal partner in advancing Africa’s digital transformation. By adopting the Digital Public Goods initiative, Nigeria will drive inclusive growth, innovation, and sustainable development across critical sectors such as health, education, financial inclusion, and digital identity.

“Smart Africa’s collaboration with Nigeria on Digital Public Goods aims to bridge the digital divide and strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure, building a robust digital economy that uplifts citizens and businesses alike,” he stated.

The partnership also involves key initiatives such as the Smart Africa Digital Academy and the Smart Africa Trust Alliance, which will provide the necessary resources and frameworks to enhance public sector services and improve digital literacy throughout the country.

This collaboration comes at a time when digital transformation is crucial for unlocking Africa’s potential and reducing the continent’s reliance on traditional economic sectors.

Koné expressed optimism that Nigeria’s leadership in this space will inspire other African nations to adopt similar models, paving the way for a more interconnected digital ecosystem across the continent.

“Nigeria’s role in this collaboration is vital not only for its own development but also for the entire continent’s digital evolution,” he added.

He stated that Nigeria plays a pivotal role in advancing Africa’s digital agenda, leveraging its dynamic tech ecosystem, vast talent pool, and established leadership in digital policy.

The DG explained that as Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, Nigeria holds unmatched influence and a wealth of innovation that drives regional digital progress.

Koné further explained that through its involvement in Smart Africa’s programmes, Nigeria is positioned to lead cross-border initiatives, such as regulatory harmonisation, and pioneer digital transformation projects, creating scalable models for digital growth both domestically and across Africa.

He added that with Nigeria’s commitment to digital policy and its vibrant startup culture, the country strengthens Africa’s global competitiveness, contributing to the advancement of the continent’s unified digital market and the shared vision of a digitally integrated Africa.
