In a recent interview with the podcast Art of the Dialogue, hip-hop star Nelly addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration celebration. The rapper, known for hits like Hot in Herre and Ride wit Me, explained his reasoning, challenging critics to reconsider their assumptions about his motives and Trump himself.

“I’m not doing this for money,” Nelly stated firmly during the interview. “This is about standing up for what I believe in and taking an opportunity to engage in dialogue—not division.”

Nelly also responded directly to the backlash from fans and fellow artists, many of whom have accused him of endorsing controversial views associated with Trump’s presidency. Some critics have pointed to allegations of racism and white supremacy against Trump as reasons why Nelly’s decision is problematic.

The rapper didn’t shy away from the criticism, instead challenging his detractors. “If you’re going to call someone a white supremacist, show me the proof,” he said. “I’m not here to co-sign anyone’s personal opinions or beliefs—I’m here to represent myself, my values, and my community.”

Nelly’s decision to perform has sparked a heated debate in the music industry and among fans. While some see it as an act of pragmatism or an effort to bridge divides, others view it as a betrayal of the values many hip-hop artists champion.

Despite the backlash, Nelly remains unapologetic about his choice. “You don’t create change by sitting on the sidelines,” he explained. “Sometimes you have to step into uncomfortable spaces to make your voice heard. This is bigger than politics—it’s about finding a way forward.”

As the inauguration approaches, Nelly’s performance is expected to draw significant attention, with both supporters and critics eagerly watching how the rapper’s decision plays out on such a high-profile stage.
