Sokoto Civil Servants Get First New Minimum Wage From Gov’t

The Governor of Sokoto State, Ahmed Aliyu, has given the green light for the implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants, effective today, Monday, January 27, 2025.

As a result of this approval, civil servants in Sokoto State will receive the new minimum wage alongside their January salaries.

A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Aliyu, Abubakar Bawa, indicated that this payment will extend to both state civil servants and local government employees throughout the state.

This adjustment to the national minimum wage aligns with the recent policy established by the federal government and fulfills a prior commitment made by the governor.

Governor Aliyu has encouraged civil servants to show their appreciation for this initiative by diligently fulfilling their duties.

“With the commencement of the payment of this new national minimum wage, we expect a renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality and above all, seriousness from our civil servants,” he said.

The governor has committed to maintaining timely salary payments between the 19th and 22nd of each month, emphasizing that his administration will prioritize the welfare of workers.

It is important to note that before the current administration took office, employees faced uncertainty regarding their salary disbursements, often waiting up to 50 days instead of the standard 25 to 30 days.

Since the new government assumed leadership, state workers now receive their salaries consistently within the specified timeframe, and efforts are underway to address the outstanding gratuities owed to retirees.

To facilitate this, the state government has allocated ₦500 million each month to settle the backlog of unpaid gratuities, in addition to another ₦300 million designated for those who have retired from 2023 onward.

This initiative aims to ensure that by the end of the current administration’s term, no civil servant will be left with outstanding gratuity payments from the Sokoto State government.
