The South-East hierarchy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said efforts were being made to reposition the party in Enugu State.
This followed the defection of Gov Peter Mbah and the erstwhile leadership of the party in the state. Mbah had defected alongside members of his cabinet, a majority of the State House of Assembly members, all the 17 council chairmen in the state and other state stakeholders, including former Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
This resolution to reposition PDP in Enugu State was reached during an engagement between members of the Southeast PDP Special Committee on Enugu Affairs and the Enugu State Working Committee. The state working committee was led by the Acting State Chairman, Barr Steve Oruruo.
The meeting centred on the reconciliation, revitalisation of party structures, and renewed engagement with grass-roots stakeholders across the 17 local government areas.
The Chairman of the Special Committee and Southeast Secretary of the PDP, Chief James Ugwu, said the meeting was the foundation for unity and renewed strength within the party.
According to him, despite the recent political shifts in the state following Mbah’s defection, the PDP remained strong in the state.
Chief Ugwu said, “We are not discouraged. This is a time for rebuilding, reconciliation, and strategic engagement. We are mobilising from the grass roots, reaching out to stakeholders, and realigning the party to reflect the will and aspirations of the people.”
The Secretary of the Special Committee and Southeast Zonal Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Engr Chigozie Igwe, said the interaction was part of the steps to reclaim the party’s dominance in Enugu. Igwe said although the exit of Governor Peter Mbah from the PDP was unexpected, the party remained focused on renewal and repositioning.
In his words, “The PDP has been the cornerstone of Enugu’s political stability since 1999. The people-centred ideology will guide us back to victory. The committee will drive reconciliation and strengthen local structures ahead of future elections.”
The Acting Chairman of the PDP in Enugu State, Barr Steve Oruruo, thanked the zonal leadership for its support. He reaffirmed his commitment to rebuilding confidence and restoring public trust in the party.
Oruruo said, “Our focus is on unity, service, and accountability. The PDP remains the people’s choice in Enugu.”
The South East PDP expressed confidence in the party’s national leadership, and expressed hope of reclaiming the governorship seat of Enugu State in 2027.
