The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared its full support for the call by South-West Governors urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fast-track the establishment of State Police across the federation, describing the demand as timely, logical, and firmly in the national interest.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party’s spokesman, Mogaji (Hon.) Seye Oladejo, said the governors’ united position reflects the region’s longstanding commitment to building a modern, community-rooted security framework capable of addressing evolving threats swiftly and effectively. He noted that the call aligns with the progressive philosophy of the APC, which affirms that security must be local, intelligence-driven, and responsive to the needs of communities.
Mr. Oladejo emphasized that President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated the political will to reform and modernize Nigeria’s internal security apparatus. The renewed call by the governors, he said, reinforces the administration’s commitment to a responsive, people-centered, and technologically enhanced security architecture.
The Lagos APC described the push for State Police as both inevitable and essential, stressing that Nigeria’s complex security environment requires a multilayered policing structure. Properly developed and federally coordinated State Police, the party said, would strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rapid response, and bring security closer to the grassroots.
The party also highlighted the South-West’s leadership in promoting decentralized security, pointing to the Amotekun initiative and sustained investments in local security infrastructure as proof that the region has consistently led by example. Establishing State Police, it noted, is the natural continuation of these efforts.
Warning against attempts to politicize the issue, the Lagos APC maintained that national security must remain above partisan interests. It urged for honest, constructive dialogue rather than fearmongering or misrepresentation.
Reaffirming its support for both President Tinubu and the South-West Governors, the party insisted that the creation of State Police is long overdue. It called on stakeholders nationwide to work with the President to build a safer, stronger, and more secure Nigeria
