Warning! Warning! Spoilers ahead for Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #9!
Star Wars has confirmed a Dark Side love interest for Kylo Ren, complicating his Sequel Trilogy love story with Rey. The appearance of Kylo’s rival for leadership of the Knights of Ren took a romantic turn in the latest issue of Legacy of Vader, as the potential usurper instead attempted to steal Kylo’s heart.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #9 is written by Charles Soule, with art by Stefano Raffaele. Astute readers picked up on a vibe between Tava Ren and Kylo in the advanced preview, and the full issue confirms this with a big, dramatic kiss.
Though Kylo rejects Tava’s advances, the end of the issue makes it clear he does feel something for her.

In Legacy of Vader #9, Tava Ren sneaks aboard Kylo Red’s First Order flagship in what she frankly admits is an assassination mission. However, she clearly finds herself attracted to Kylo, and it’s fairly obvious from the choices he makes throughout the course of the issue that he finds her intriguing as well.
Notably, Kylo gains the upper hand in their initial duel, but chooses not to execute Tava. Instead, he invites her back to his quarters for a private meal, during which she explains her claim to the Knights of Ren, and suggests that Kylo isn’t truly committed to his position as Supreme Leader.
The tension between Tava and Kylo peaks with a kiss, after which he promptly calls security on her, forcing Tava to flee. She impressively fights her way off the ship, and at the end of Legacy of Vader #9, when he has the opportunity to blow up her escaping vessel, Kylo refuses to give the order.

There are some immediate parallels between Tava Ren and Rey, and Legacy of Vader #9 makes it clear Kylo Ren recognizes these as well. Notably, during Tava’s first attack on Kylo, she says “this is more fun than you’ve had in ages, isn’t it,” which prompts Kylo to flash back to his brief time fighting side-by-side with Rey in The Last Jedi.
Star Wars fans know how Kylo Ren’s arc, and his romance with Rey, will play out in Rise of Skywalker, which chronologically follows Legacy of Vader. That said, his feelings for Tava Ren, even latent feels, complicate that plotline from the movies. It adds further dimension to Kylo as a character, helping to flesh out the blank spots left by the Sequels.
Fans predicted romantic tension between Kylo and Tava in Legacy of Vader #9, and it delivered on that front. Readers also wondered where Tava might be during the Sequels if she survived the issue; this also came to pass, leaving open the door to future appearances in the Star Wars Sequel era.
