The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has declared that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity crisis can be resolved in six months if the Federal Government approves the creation of state police.
Adams made the assertion on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, amid renewed nationwide calls for decentralised policing.
According to him, for the first time in Nigeria’s recent history, all six geopolitical zones, including leaders in the North, now support the establishment of state police.
“For the first time, the six geopolitical zones in the country agree on state police. Even our Northern brothers, the Northern Governors and the Emirs, also agree on state police,” he said.
He stressed that once the National Assembly passes the legislation and President Bola Tinubu signs it into law, the fight against banditry, terrorism and kidnapping will take a dramatic turn for the better.
“And I believe that if the National Assembly legislates on state police and the president signs it into law, the issue of insecurity in this country will be resolved within a period of six months,” he added.
Adams acknowledged the role of the Amotekun Corps operating across South-West states, but noted that the outfit is hampered by inadequate weapons.
“We have Amotekun in the South-West, but they lack the sophisticated weapons needed to confront terrorists effectively,” he said.
His remarks align with a recent meeting of Southern governors, who insisted that state police remain a non-negotiable element of their demand for true federalism and grassroots security.
