A former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jr, has warned the political class against embezzling public funds that should be used to develop the nation.

Frank Nweke said politicians would be ruined by the poor they kept impoverished as a result of bad governance.

In his New Year message on Tuesday, Nweke condemned the overreliance on charity in addressing hunger and economic hardship ravaging the country.

“Every year, many Nigerians rely on the charity of a few philanthropists to get by during festive seasons, hoping for a better new year. While our culture encourages us to be our brother’s keeper, individual generosity can only go so far in the face of systemic poverty and inequality.

“This year has been particularly heartbreaking, with the tanking economy and widespread hunger affecting even the hardest-working individuals.

“Those in power must recognize that embezzling public funds to flaunt wealth will not shield them from the crisis being brewed by widespread hunger and poverty.

“The enlightened minority will continue to raise an alarm about the impending doom while providing whatever succour they can to their communities,” he said.

The former Enugu State governorship candidate under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) called on federal and state governments to prioritize making people-oriented policies that would help address poverty in the country.

Surely, the federal and state governments must reassess their approach to governance, prioritizing the people and deploying sustainable solutions to address poverty, inequality, and economic stagnation,” Nweke stated.
