The Long Walk has strolled past one of the most revered horror movies from Stephen King – or from anyone – at the global box office, as the 2025 King adaptation has officially grossed more than The Shining.
Based on Box Office Mojo‘s most recent numbers for The Long Walk, the film has grossed $50.81 million worldwide as of October 13. That means in the month-plus since the film’s September 12 release date, The Long Walk has made more money than The Shining did in its entire run; the 1980 classic brought in $47.97 million.
As of right now, The Long Walk now sits as the 16th highest-grossing film based on Stephen King’s work. While a move into the top 10 seems unlikely based on the film’s recent returns – and the fact that a VOD release date has been announced – there’s still a chance it could move up into the top 15, the spot currently occupied by Stand By Me.

The Long Walk stars Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson as two of 50 young men in a dystopian US that take part in a competition where the only rule is to walk until you can’t walk anymore, at which point you’re killed. The winner is the last man walking. Francis Lawrence directs from a script by JT Mollner.
Reviews for The Long Walk were strong. In addition to ScreenRant‘s The Long Walk review calling it a “terrific, entertaining film with some interesting things to say,” the movie is “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with an 87% score.
That makes it the highest rated of three Stephen King adaptations released in 2025; the other two being The Monkey and The Life of Chuck. However, of those three, The Monkey is actually the highest-grossing King adaptation thus far, pulling in $68.87 million and just missing out on the all-time top 10 box office for a King-based movie.
There is one more Stephen King adaptation left in 2025 that could challenge these numbers – the Glen Powell-led The Running Man. Directed by Edgar Wright and with a star-studded cast, The Running Man is easily the biggest King adaptation of the year, and is currently projecting a $40-$50 million opening weekend (per Boxoffice Pro). It also received a glowing review from King ahead of its release.
Prior to that, The Long Walk is still playing exclusively in movie theaters until its VOD debut on October 21.
