Steven Spielberg's New Sci-Fi Movie: Mysterious Alien Image Teased

A mysterious alien-themed image has been released for Steven Spielberg‘s upcoming sci-fi movie. Spielberg has directed numerous hit movies, including sci-fi flicks like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, and War of the Worlds.

The acclaimed filmmaker’s next project, which is currently untitled but will be released in theaters on June 12, 2026, is starting to be promoted (via @mediaforupdates) in Times Square via an intriguing billboard that features an eyeball with the caption, “All will be disclosed. Spielberg. 06.12.26.”

Not much is known about the plot at this point, but reports indicate that Spielberg’s 2026 film is about UFOs and aliens, with cast members Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, Wyatt Russell, Josh O’Connor, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes all on board.

David Koepp, who has written scripts for several Spielberg films over the years, including Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, has partnered with the award-winning director once again.

Spielberg has also teamed up with producer Kristie Macosko Krieger after previously collaborating on A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Adventures of Tintin, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Bridge of Spies, ..., West Side Story, and The Fabelmans.

Speaking of collaborations, the biggest name of them all, the iconic 93-year-old movie composer John Williams, is back in the fold as well after composing the music for almost every Spielberg movie.

Outside of 2018’s Ready Player One, Spielberg has shied away from sci-fi in recent years, choosing instead to direct movies like War Horse, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The BFG, ..., West Side Story, and The Fabelmans. Most of these films are historical dramas, with some fantasy and musicals mixed in as well.

With his 2026 UFO film, Spielberg is returning to the genre that kept the director a household name long after the thriller Jaws was released. Early on in his career, he directed alien films like Close Encounters and E.T., both of which were nominated for and won multiple Oscars. Spielberg himself was nominated for Best Director each time.

Over 20 years later, he directed another alien movie, War of the Worlds, based on the H.G. Wells novel.

Almost the same number of years have passed since then, and Spielberg is ready to dive back into the world of aliens. The trailer is reportedly being released alongside Avatar: Fire & Ash, which will be released in theaters on December 19.

Unless more details are released in the next week and a half, it seems likely that the title of Spielberg’s UFO movie will be revealed with the trailer.

With this cryptic and mysterious Times Square billboard, Universal is starting to build suspense and a lot of hype for Spielberg’s next project. E.T. is considered one of the best films of all time, which means the bar is extremely high for the director. But if anyone can pull off this feat, it’s Spielberg.
