Stop downloading cracked software, NITDA cautions Nigerians

The National Information Technology Development Agency has warned Nigerians against downloading cracked versions of software, citing a new malware campaign that uses pirated applications to distribute information-stealing malware.

The agency, in an advisory issued on Monday by its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team, said attackers are embedding malware strains like Lummar Stealer and ACR Stealer into unlicensed software to target users who download applications from unreliable sources.

The malware, once executed, silently extracts sensitive information, including browser-stored passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, and session cookies, potentially leading to financial loss, account takeovers, and identity theft, NITDA said.

“If a device is infected, the malware can also deploy additional payloads, further compromising affected systems,” the agency said in the advisory.

NITDA advised users to avoid cracked versions of software, download applications only from legitimate sources, and keep their software up-to-date. It also urged users to enable Multi-Factor Authentication and install up-to-date antivirus and anti-malware software.
