A student of the Obafemi Awolowo University Dental College has committed suicide, the institution’s student association has said.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 13, the association said one of its students took his life after the release of the institution’s examination.
Adebayo Idris, the president of IFUDSA said the death of the student by suicide is devastating.
Idris the student’s passing is a painful reminder of the silent battles several individuals are passing through daily.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry. We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of examination results.
“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face,” Idris said.
On behalf of the association, Idris extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late student.
He said that while the tragedy may leave many in shock but it is important that members of the associations and other students alike are encouraged to always reach out to one another.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles.”
The statement further reaffirmed IFUDSA’s commitment to improving student welfare and mental health support.
“We also reaffirm our commitment to advocating for improved student welfare and mental health support within the association, so that such tragedies can be prevented in the future,” Idris said.
