THE Super Eagles B of Nigeria became the first team to be sent packing from Group D of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Sudan in Zanzibar tonight.
Omer Yagoub scored twice for Sudan, while the unlucky Super Eagles B defender Leonard Ngenge had a hand in two of the goals.
Having lost their opening match 1-0 to Senegal last Tuesday, the defeat to Sudan means the Super Eagles B have no points from two games and have no chance of finishing in their group’s top two positions.
The descent into disaster was started by Ngenge when he inadvertently put the ball in his own net.
The ball ricocheted off the woodwork and bounced off the centre-back’s head for the opening goal in the 22nd minute.
Incidentally, just moments earlier the Super Eagles B thought they had taken the lead when Anthony Ijoma broke free from the halfway line and slotted into the Sudan net.
The goal was however chalked off after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review showed that Ijoma was offside.
Ngege’s miserable evening continued three minutes before half-time when he handled the ball in the box as he jumped to head it.
A penalty was awarded to Sudan, which Walieldin Khidir confidently converted in the 44th minute.
The Super Eagles B were very close to reducing the deficit just before half-time, but Sikiru Alimi blazed the ball high and wide from close range when presented with his side’s best opportunity.
Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle hauled off Ngenge at half-time, but things did not improve for the 2018 runners-up.
Omer Yagoub struck in the 56th and 62nd minutes to complete Super Eagles B’s humiliation as they suffered their joint heaviest defeat in CHAN history.
The Super Eagles B are bottom of Group D with zero points, with Sudan on top with four, same as Senegal. Congo are third with two.
