The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps toward regulating the use of social media, warning that the growing spread of fake news is putting Nigeria’s peace and unity at risk.

Speaking on Tuesday at the General Assembly of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Birnin Kebbi, the Sultan expressed deep concern over the way misinformation travels across online platforms, noting that many people tend to act on unverified claims without questioning their authenticity.

“It is now time for the government to regulate social media in the country. The spread of fake news is dangerous and must be addressed,” he said.

He went on to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces for their ongoing efforts to restore stability in areas affected by insecurity, especially in regions plagued by banditry. According to him, the military’s sacrifices made it possible for the council’s meeting to be held in Kebbi State.

“I strongly condemn some of the harsh words directed at our military because of certain setbacks. They are doing their best to restore security in many parts of the country. Such criticism does not help. Instead, it discourages those who are putting their lives on the line for our safety,” the Sultan added.

The Vice Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and Emir of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi, also addressed the gathering. He said the theme of the assembly, “Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria,” illustrates the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and unity in tackling the region’s security challenges.

Elkanemi described traditional institutions as a vital link between the government and local communities, noting that they play a key role in promoting peace through non-violent means.

Among those present were Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Etsu Nupe, and several other leading traditional rulers from the North.
