THE Federal Government has confirmed that the Super Eagles’ match bonuses and allowances at the Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have ‘cleared the necessary regulatory stages’, as a crisis has been averted.
The Super Eagles had threatened to refuse to travel from Fez to Marrakesh today for their quarter-final clash with Algeria billed for Saturday in protest as their match bonuses have not been paid.
Having won all their games at the tournament so far, the Super Eagles are owed bonuses for four matches, and they threatened to down tools if they were not paid.
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Shehu Dikko stepped in last night to resolve the dispute, assuring the players that funds for their AFCON allowances and bonuses had been processed since November, just awaiting final clearances.
In a statement today, the Minister of State for Funance Doris Uzoka-Anite said the payment will be reflected in the players’ domiciliary accounts in a day or two.
Uzoka-Anite explained that the payment was delayed by the “conversion process to move funds into foreign currency” which was the “players’ preferences”.
She added that the process has now been fast-tracked and the “final transfers to domiciliary accounts are currently in flight”.
“The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have successfully streamlined the foreign exchange processing to ensure our players are rewarded without further delay,” the minister noted.
“Going forward, the process will be fully streamlined to ensure faster, more predictable disbursements aligned with international best practice.”
This is the second time in two months that the Super Eagles would be protesting over unpaid entitlements.
In November 2025, the players missed training sessions in protest during the African World Cup playoffs to demand payment of owed allowances for several matches, dating back months.
