THE Super Falcons of Nigeria took a big step towards reaching the next Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 2-0 victory over Benin Republic in the first leg of their final qualifying round tie today.
Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo struck in the first half as the 10-time African champions eased to a comfortable win in Lome, Togo, which was Benin Republic’s ‘home’ ground for the tie due to lack of suitable facilities back home.
The Super Falcons got their noses in front in the 24th minute, with Ihezuo lifting the ball over the Benin Republic goalkeeper off an assist from Deborah Abiodun.
Okoronkwo, who was one of the standout players as the Super Falcons won their record-extending 10th WAFCON title in July, doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time, Abiodun again setting it up.
The Canada-based Okoronkwo has now registered three goals and seven assists in seven national team matches in 2025.
The Super Falcons will seek to punch their WAFCON ticket when they host Benin Republic in the return leg in Abeokuta on Tuesday.
