More bad news for R. Kelly this week as the Supreme Court has denied an attempt by the disgraced singer to overturn his conviction… for the second time.
Kelly’s defense team argued before the Supreme Court that prosecutors had “stretched” the interpretation of the law by broadening the definition of “enterprise.” According to Kelly, under RICO, an enterprise must involve members who are united by a shared intent to participate in unlawful activity.
“To hold otherwise would mean that any rogue bad actor operating within a legal organization could be prosecuted under RICO as occurred here,” his attorneys argued. “This scenario stretches the RICO statute beyond and contrary to its purpose.”
The Supreme Court decided not to hear his appeal.
Last week, the Chicago star attempted to be freed from prison and placed in house detention despite his claims that prison officials are conspiring to end his life. Kelly will remain in prison to serve out the remainder of his 30-year prison sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking convictions.
