A suspect, Adekunle Rotimi, 38, was on Tuesday docked before Chief Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara for allegedly attempting to kill a policewoman within the court premises.

The Police prosecutor, Anifowose Saheed, informed the court that the defendant attempted to kill one woman police Babatunde Omotayo when after his effort to run away from court on February 18, 2025, was foiled by the woman.

He alleged that the defendant pinned the woman police inside a fish pond and wanted to strangulate her.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges bordering on an attempt to escape from the court and attempted killing leveled against him.

Defence counsel, Dauda Oyewale, urged the court to grant him bail in a liberal term, saying the alleged offences were bailable in nature.

However, the prosecutor urged the court to decline the bail on the ground that he was standing trial on the day he attempted to run away, and granting him bail will jeopardise his trial.

“The defendant was remanded for unlawful possession of firearms and he told the prison officer that he wanted to urinate when he made effort to run away and he wanted to kill the woman police who foiled his plan”, he said.

Counsel to the defendant urged the court to discountenance the claim of the prosecutor that granting defendant bail will jeopardize prosecution, saying that his claims were opinion and speculation which has no place in law.

Magistrate Ayilara thereby granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2 million with one surety in like sum, saying that the surety must be a land owner in the state and adjourned the case to May 8, for hearing.
