Sydney Sweeney Responds To Christy’s Disappointing Box Office After Streak Of Flop

Christy is the latest movie starring Sydney Sweeney to flop at the box office, though she is standing by her portrayal of this true story. The Christy Martin biopic features Sweeney as the titular character, a groundbreaking boxer who rose to fame in the 1990s while her relationship with her coach-turned-husband became increasingly dangerous.

Directed by David Michôd and also starring Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, and Katy O’Brian, Christy earned a shocking $1.3 million at the box office worldwide in its first weekend, with an estimated budget between $30 and $40 million. Sweeney has seen box office success in the past with Anyone But You grossing $220 million and Immaculate $35.1 million (both good hauls for their budgets).

However, 2025 is becoming a losing streak for the Euphoria star. She first appeared in the docudrama thriller Eden alongside Ana de Armas and Vanessa Kirby, which grossed $2.7 million globally on a budget of $35 million. However, Eden did become a digital hit following its VOD release. Meanwhile, Americana didn’t cross $1 million, but it is also now on digital.

Regardless, following Christy’s opening weekend, Sweeney took to Instagram (on Monday, November 10) to say that “we don’t always make art for the numbers, we make it for the impact.” In her post, Sweeney emphasizes Christy depiction of domestic violence, calling it “the most impactful project of [her] life.” Check out Sweeney’s post below:

[…] this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life. this film stands for survival, courage, and hope. through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives,” says Sweeney.

While its critical reviews are middling-to-good, Christy‘s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is near perfect, suggesting that the film is moving people the way Sweeney hopes. Christy may be divisive, but it tells an important story. While the studio is likely still worried about the numbers, Sweeney says that she’s satisfied with the fact that the movie is out there.

Her team, however, will be hoping that she could have a box office rebound before the end of 2025 with The Housemaid, also starring Amanda Seyfried. Sweeney might be happy with Christy, but her two movies from before it don’t have the same feeling that they should have been made regardless of profit. However, even her talking about the movie in this way could make people more interested in seeing it.
