Christy is set to continue a disappointing streak for star Sydney Sweeney. The movie features the Anyone But You star playing real-life boxing champion Christy Martin opposite a cast that includes Ben Foster, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Merritt Wever. Christy reviews have been middling, earning the movie a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Christy is projected to earn a 3-day debut of $1.25 million from 2,814 theaters at the domestic box office. This sees it set to debut at No. 11 behind Tron: Ares. While it could potentially surge on Saturday and break into the Top 10 by the end of the weekend, it nevertheless continues a disappointing box office streak for Sydney Sweeney.
This is because Christy is the star’s third 2025 movie in a row to debut with a 3-day total below $2 million. The previous Sydney Sweeney movies to do so were the Ron Howard survival thriller Eden (which debuted with $1.05 million in 664 theaters) and the neo-Western crime thriller Americana (which debuted with roughly $500,000 in 1,100 theaters).
While these 2025 titles have not received wide releases as robust as some of Sweeney’s previous theatrical outings, this is part of an overarching downturn in the box office for the star since she scored a major hit with 2023’s Anyone But You. That romantic comedy, which also starred Glen Powell, grossed a whopping $220.3 million against a reported budget of just $25 million.
However, her follow-up theatrical release, the 2024 superhero tentpole Madame Web, was a flop, grossing just $100.5 million against its reported budget of $100 million. She followed this with the 2024 horror movie Immaculate, which grossed $35 million, though that was a much better haul compared to that movie’s reported $9 million budget.
While Christy continues this negative trend, the fact that it is her highest-grossing debut of the year so far is a good sign. It is highly likely that the Euphoria star will be on an upswing at the box office before long, because she stars in the upcoming The Housemaid, which debuts in theaters on December 19.
The thriller from director Paul Feig (A Simple Favor) also stars Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. While the ultimate fate of Christy remains to be seen, the fact that The Housemaid has a star-studded cast and crew and is based on a bestselling novel by Freida McFadden means that Sydney Sweeney’s period of box office doldrums may end before 2025 draws to a close.
