‘Euphoria’ actress Sydney Sweeney’s bad week continues as Christy, her new sports biopic about pioneering boxer Christy Martin, earned just $1.3 million in its opening weekend.
According to Box Office Mojo, the film’s performance ranks among the weakest wide releases of its size (2,000 screens), coming in at No. 12 overall and No. 9 when excluding rereleases.
After word spread of the film’s disappointing sales, Sweeney took to social media. “I am so deeply proud of this movie,” she wrote on Instagram alongside behind-the-scenes photos. “Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.”
“We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives,” she continued. “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. We don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”
Christy Martin was the first female fighter promoted by Don King and the first to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She held the World Boxing Council super welterweight title in 2009 and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.
In 2010, she was stabbed, shot, and left for dead by her husband and trainer of 19 years, James Martin, played in the film by Ben Foster. He was convicted of attempted second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The news comes on the heels of reports that her Euphoria co-star, Zendaya, is refusing to do promo for the upcoming season with her due to her controversial political views.
