Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury sustained in Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Leicester City, Footynaija.com reports.

The 27-year-old Nigeria international collided heavily with ... in the 88th minute at the City Ground while trying to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga. Though initially attempting to continue, he was forced off moments later after receiving treatment on the pitch.

Awoniyi underwent the first phase of surgery on Monday night.

According to a Daily Mail report, the procedure was complex and potentially life-saving, with a second operation scheduled for Wednesday. He remains under close observation in hospital.

In an official statement on Tuesday, Nottingham Forest confirmed that Awoniyi is “recovering well” and stressed that his injury is “a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game and why a player’s health and wellbeing must always come first.”

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis entered the pitch after the final whistle to speak with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, reportedly unhappy with how the incident was handled. Marinakis is understood to be receiving regular updates on Awoniyi’s condition.

There has been renewed scrutiny of offside protocols following the incident.

Awoniyi appeared to be in an offside position when he received the ball, but under current rules, the assistant referee kept their flag down to allow the passage of play to continue — resulting in the Nigerian striker’s collision. While the system supports goal-scoring opportunities, critics argue it exposes players to unnecessary danger.

Awoniyi, who replaced Ibrahim Sangare late in the match, has been a key figure for both club and country. His long-term recovery will be closely monitored in the coming days.
