President Patrice Talon of the Republic of Benin on Wednesday received a delegation from the Nigerian Army, following Nigeria’s decision to support its West African neighbour in the wake of a foiled coup attempt.
The delegation’s visit is part of ongoing military cooperation between the two countries, aimed at reinforcing the Beninese armed forces and ensuring regional stability.
Naijaonpoint reports that this development came shortly after the Nigerian Senate approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy military forces to the Republic of Benin.
The request was considered and unanimously adopted during Tuesday’s plenary session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The Senate’s decision followed a detailed review by the Committee of the Whole, which supported the Federal Government’s move to intervene under ECOWAS protocols to restore peace and stability.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” Akpabio declared, just before announcing the Senate’s consent to the deployment.
The Senate’s approval letter is expected to be transmitted to President Tinubu immediately, giving legal backing to Nigeria’s military support for the Benin Republic.
The move signals Nigeria’s renewed commitment to regional security and democracy in West Africa, especially amid rising threats of unconstitutional power grabs across the sub-region.
