Aminu Tambuwal, senator representing Sokoto south, has urged the federal government to ensure that the current anti-terrorism operations does not stop at the state.
United States President Donald Trump had on Thursday announced what he described as “powerful and deadly” air strikes against terrorists operating in the north-west region of Nigeria.
The United States Africa Command later clarified that the strikes were undertaken at the “request of Nigerian authorities.”
The federal ministry of foreign affairs confirmed that Nigeria worked with Washington in carrying out the strikes against ISIS-linked fighters in Sokoto.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Tambuwal said the cooperation must be widened and should not focus on only one area.
The former Sokoto governor stressed that insecurity exists in several regions, insisting that no troubled location should be ignored.
He cautioned that “areas of concern like Borno, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, and a host of other parts of the country should be covered by this operation.
“This is necessary so that we do not have a situation where a particular part of the country, which has not been as widely reported, is facing major security challenges but is left out of the narrative,” he added.
The senator also maintained that stronger partnerships with other global powers are necessary to curtail the insurgency.
“I believe that the Nigerian government should seek greater collaboration with many more countries, including the US and others that are willing to support this fight; after all, it is a transnational issue.
“It is not just a local issue about Nigeria, because this is all over the Sahel, from Mali to Burkina Faso and other countries of this kind,” Tambuwal added.
