THE Taraba State Deputy Governor, Aminu Alkali, has officially resumed work after being away from office since November 2024 due to health challenges.
A video obtained by newsmen showed Alkali in his office, reviewing files alongside aides who welcomed him back. However, it was not immediately clear on which day he resumed.
During his absence, the deputy governor’s responsibilities were temporarily handled by the governor’s deputy chief of staff, Emmanuel Lawson—a decision that sparked controversy and speculations about a possible replacement.
Governor Agbu Kefas later clarified that the arrangement was purely administrative and aimed at ensuring smooth governance, dismissing suggestions of ulterior motives.
“I have no hidden agenda in handling issues relating to his health and have not violated the law by refusing to appoint another deputy,” Kefas said in a broadcast.
He added that while he remained hopeful about Alkali’s recovery and return to duty, constitutional provisions would guide any decision should circumstances change.
Back in March, the state government revealed that Alkali had suffered a stroke, which affected his ability to speak.
The Commissioner for Information and Reorientation, Zainab Usman, explained that he first received treatment in Abuja before being moved to Cairo, Egypt, for further care.
She urged residents to show empathy, stressing that illness is a human condition that can affect anyone.
Alkali’s return puts an end to months of uncertainty about his health status and role in government.
His resumption also reaffirms Governor Kefas’ earlier assurances that no hidden political agenda was behind the temporary delegation of his duties.
