The Taraba Judiciary in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), have adopted the State Administration of Criminal Justice Law Practice Direction No 1. of 2025 in Jalingo
.
Justice Joel Agya, Chief Judge (C-J) of Taraba, said this at a One Day Validation Meeting for Criminal Justice Law Practice Direction on Wednesday in Jalingo.
The C-J said the exercise would engender modern legal practice in the state.
Agya said that the exercise represented a significant step towards entrenching a criminal justice system that would be efficient, fair and consistent with the rule of law.
He also gave assurance that the event would enable the Taraba Judiciary, not only to implement the modern legal practice, but to also serve as a model for other jurisdictions in promoting access to justice.
Agya also said the event had demonstrated the Taraba judiciary’s resolve to modernise its justice sector, protect the rights of citizens and promote accountability.
The C-J commended NAILS for it unwavering dedication to the development of law and legal institutions in Nigeria.
According to him, NAILS’ contribution to legal scholarship and practice is an enduring legacy that continues to enrich the nation’s justice system and strengthen the fabric of the society.
“We look forward to collaborating with the institute on digital transformation initiative with particular focus on leveraging technology to improve operational efficiency and transparency in legal sector.
“We are grateful for the guidance and expertise of the institute, which will continue to strengthen our capacity to deliver justice effectively,” Agya said.
Earlier, Prof. Abdulqudri Abikan, Director-General (D-G) of NIALS, said they were in Taraba to provide technical support to the state Judiciary for the implementation of the new practice direction.
Abikan said that the exercise was so far, conducted in 20 states of the federation where the new practice direction was being implemented.
He said that the exercise required all stakeholders to come out with an acceptable and sustainable order for the state.
Abikan said that the institute would print 200 copies of the adopted document for the C-J of the state for onward distribution to courts.
The D-G said that tbe project for the new law practice direction was funded by the Mac Arthur Foundation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that stakeholders from the state Ministry of Justice, High Court Judges, Magistrates, the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigerian Bar Association and Chief Registrars attended the event. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
