Strong indications emerged on Monday that Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, may soon dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that could end the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the state.
Multiple party insiders told Punch that discussions between Kefas’ camp and APC powerbrokers in Abuja are already at an advanced stage.
“It’s no longer speculation. Consultations are ongoing, and the governor is weighing the timing carefully,” a senior aide to the governor disclosed.
An APC insider in Jalingo described the development as “a homecoming long overdue”, arguing that Kefas’ leadership record and grassroots acceptance would boost the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Kefas is a performer. His coming will only make our structure stronger,” the source said.
Within the PDP, however, tension is mounting as stakeholders view the rumoured defection as a betrayal of mandate.
“If Kefas moves, PDP will be finished in Taraba. He is the only one still holding the structure together,” a senior PDP chieftain admitted.
Although Governor Kefas has yet to issue a formal statement, his recent increased visits to APC-controlled states and meetings with federal officials have heightened speculation of an imminent switch.
