Tata Electronics is now focusing on developing advanced machinery crucial for manufacturing iPhone casings. Previously, the company primarily assembled enclosures for Apple in India.
Now, it’s venturing into building “sophisticated” high-precision machines, aiming to reduce reliance on imports from China, as reported by the Economic Times.
Local Development and Export Plans
To achieve this, Tata Electronics has partnered with Indian manufacturers to build these machines domestically, intending to export them in the future.
As per the report, Tata Group is conducting staged tests of these machines at its Hosur facility. This move aligns with India’s goal of achieving a $300 billion electronics export by 2025.
Potential Impact and Challenges
Experts foresee a positive impact on the Indian manufacturing landscape. However, challenges exist, including the need to meet Apple’s stringent standards and the current lack of precision machinery capabilities among domestic manufacturers.
This initiative forms part of Tata’s global strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on specific components. While CNC machines are widely used in India, precision manufacturing remains a challenge due to the lack of domestic capability.
However, with collaborations in Pune and Bengaluru, Tata Electronics is striving to address this gap. Although exporting these machines is part of their agenda, it may take time to meet international standards, the report added.
