The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has unveiled its largest-ever annual intervention budget ₦1.6 trillion for projects across Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

The fund, sourced from the 3% education tax on company profits under the TETFund Act, will address urgent needs in education, healthcare training, campus security, energy infrastructure, and student financial support.

Chairman of TETFund’s Governing Board and former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, disclosed the breakdown during a media briefing in Katsina on Sunday, stressing that the interventions are demand-driven and guided by transparency.

“Institutions write to us, and we approve projects for them based on their needs and available resources,” Masari explained.

Breakdown of the ₦1.6 Trillion Allocation

  • ₦460bn (40%) for direct interventions in one university, one polytechnic, and one college of education in each state.

  • ₦225bn to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to expand higher education access for financially disadvantaged students.

  • ₦70bn for solar and gas-powered energy projects to reduce reliance on unstable grid supply.

  • ₦25bn to improve campus security through street lighting and safety infrastructure.

  • Over ₦100bn for medical sciences training, aimed at doubling Nigeria’s healthcare workforce and curbing the migration of medical personnel.

Under the healthcare initiative, three institutions in each geopolitical zone will receive ₦4bn each to expand training in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, laboratory science, and other critical areas.

Masari said President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about Nigeria’s shortage of medical professionals and has directed measures to rebuild capacity.

The chairman also assured that TETFund is employing a rigorous monitoring and evaluation framework, supported by independent consultants, to ensure equitable distribution and impactful results nationwide.
