While James Gunn’s DC Universe is underway, one project has already been axed for the time being. As the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” slate is continuing to work on various movies and TV shows, other films at DC Studios have been taking longer than others.
During an appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, The Batman star Colin Farrell, who plays the Penguin, finally broke his silence on the Sgt. Rock project that he was set to headline before the film got cancelled. The Oz Cobb star stated first, “That was a fantastic script. I wonder what’s happening with it.”
He elaborated by sharing that “I know nothing about it, brother,” adding that he “was going to do it with Luca [Guadagnino.] We spoke about it a couple of times and had some really nice chats.” However, the Irish actor made it clear that “I have no idea where it is now, but it should be made. It’s really, really good. There’s some wonderful stuff in it.”
Sgt. Rock was cancelled on April 30, 2025, as it was decided that DC Studios would not move forward with the film for the time being. The script was penned by Justin Kuritzkes, who has worked with Guadagnino on Challengers.
One of the initiatives at DC Studios with Gunn and Peter Safran is that no project moves forward unless there is a finalized script and vision for the property, regardless of whether it is in the DCU timeline or Elseworlds. The Sgt. Rock movie was rumored, at one point, to be eying Mikey Madison for the female lead.
Gunn previously confirmed on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, on July 18, 2025, that Guadagnino is no longer involved with the film. He also stressed that he hopes to revisit Sgt. Rock, but it’s unclear at this point where the war movie stands at DC Studios.
Farrell is getting ready to reprise the role of the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which is slated to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. Principal photography is slated to begin in 2026.
The DCU resumes in 2026, with Supergirl on June 26, Clayface on September 11, as well as the premiere of HBO’s Lanterns, which has yet to get a premiere date.
