The Outer Worlds 2 has finally been released, and it has been well-received by critics so far, very much like the first installment in the series. Obsidian Entertainment’s RPG is a sequel to the 2019 game, but brings forth a series of improvements. In Screen Rant’s review of The Outer Worlds 2, we give it a 9/10 score, praising its rich world and improved gameplay when compared to the first title.

Now, the review scores for the game have been revealed, and they compare positively with the original entry. At the time of writing, on Metacritic, both the original The Outer Worlds and The Outer Worlds 2 have the exact same 85 Metascore. On Opencritic, however, there is a slight difference. 89% of critics recommend The Outer Worlds 2 on OpenCritic, compared to 83% of critics recommending the original title on OpenCritic.

Even though The Outer Worlds 2’s scores are not necessarily better than the original title’s, it’s great to see that they aren’t worse than the first game. The score is still subject to change as more review scores get added to these platforms, but it shows that Obsidian Entertainment is delivering the same level of quality seen in the first game, while also fixing problems in The Outer Worlds 2.

Possibly the reason why the game is being well-received is that Obsidian Entertainment has listened to feedback and has seemingly addressed some of the first game’s largest criticisms. This includes how the original title’s open world was designed, and for the second game, open-world areas were increased. Our review mentioned how some areas can still feel confined, but it seems like The Outer Worlds 2 is built for the players more than the way the first one was.

Obsidian Entertainment Is On A High Note With The Outer Worlds 2

The positive release of The Outer Worlds 2 puts Xbox Game Studios’ Obsidian Entertainment on a high note. While the developer is well-known for its expertise with RPGs, being the ones responsible for the legendary Fallout: New Vegas, it’s surprising that the company put out two huge projects this year.

Earlier in 2025, in February, Obsidian Entertainment released Avowed. There were mixed reviews for the game, especially from players, though it was generally well-received. In fact, Screen Rant’s review of Avowed gave it a 9/10 score, too, much like The Outer Worlds 2. Considering both titles, it’s been a great year for the studio.

It’s uncertain if either of the franchises will get more sequels. However, when you consider how well-received they have been and Xbox’s investment in its first-party studios, The Outer Worlds 2 may be the start of a larger series.
