The trailer for Edgar Wright’s new action movie, The Running Man, has officially been released, a month away from the movie’s debut.
Director Edgar Wright shared the trailer on X with the caption, “Play the game or the game plays you. Watch the New Trailer for ‘The Running Man’. Cannot wait for you to see my new movie large and loud! One month from today!” The film is officially set to release on November 14.
The Running Man is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. It’s set in a not-too-distant future where The Running Man is a hit TV show and a deadly competition where you must survive being hunted by professional killers for thirty days. Ben Richards (played by Glen Powell) is desperate to save his sick daughter and enters the game.
In the trailer, Powell appears to be getting attacked from every angle, and the action doesn’t seem to slow down much to fans’ delight. Powell has been making a name for himself in action movies after previously starring in Hit Man, Top Gun: Maverick, and Twisters.
Directed by Edgar Wright, known for Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead, The Running Man is set to be action-packed, featuring other well-known faces, including Lee Pace, Michael Cera, and Josh Brolin.
However, this isn’t the first adaptation of Stephen King’s novel from 1982. In 1987, Arnold Schwarzenegger starred as Ben Richards, but many found the adaptation to be underwhelming, including Wright. The original movie left out a lot of key parts of King’s novel, and at an NYCC panel, Wright discussed his version of the upcoming action:
“I always felt that there was a whole part of the story that hadn’t been adapted. My favorite remakes are ones that kind of do something different from the other one. So, this is not an attempt to remake that film, this is something that’s more faithful to the book.”
Wright isn’t writing off the 1987 adaptation completely and is even including a Schwarzenegger cameo by using his face on the $100 bill. King has described the film as “more faithful to the book to keep the fans happy enough to keep me on my toes and excited.”
Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a domestic gross of over $38 million worldwide.
