This could be Samsung's answer to the Apple Vision Pro

Apple pretty much took over the world when it launched the Apple Vision Pro. This device ushered in a new age in mobile tech, as other companies started developing their own XR devices; Samsung is among them. We’ve been following news about this potential headset for months with nothing to cling onto. Well, we’ve finally gotten our first of Samsung’s XR headset.

Named “Project Moohan”, this will be the first device to run Google’s newly-announced Android XR. This should come as no surprise, as Samsung co-developed the Android XR operating system along with Google. Just like Android, Android XR will power a wide range of devices from numerous OEMs, so expect to see it on your next favorite headset.

Here’s Samsung’s XR headset

It seems that XR is the next big frontier in mobile tech. Samsung’s Project Moohan looks like it will be an advanced XR headset that will set the standard for headsets coming forward. Samsung wants to give the users the feeling that their possibilities are endless. This is evidenced in the internal name. The word “Moohan” means “Infinity” in Korean.

Based on the picture above, this headset has a similar aesthetic to the Vision Pro. It also has a gray color with the black front. However, we see that he head strap is a bit different and the visor stick upward more than on the Vision Pro.

So, what is this headset all about?

Well, Samsung hasn’t revealed much about it. The company confirmed that the headset will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 SoC. This is a more powerful version of the chip that powers the Meta Quest 3, the XR2 Gen 2. The “Plus” variant of the chip is more powerful in several areas with a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% increase in CPU frequency. It brings 2.5X GPU performance and a 50% increase in GPU power efficiency. What this boils down to is a much more powerful headset compared to what we have on the market.

Samsung stated that Moohan will be the “most comfortable, lightweight, and ergonomic design” when it comes to headsets. These are important qualities for a device that you’re likely to wear on your head for hours. If the company’s claims hold true, then the headset will offer a “boundless display with rich content all around you”.

Samsung didn’t share too much information on the display tech. The chip running this headset can support up to 4.3K per eye at 90fps. That’s pretty sharp, but there’s no telling if Samsung will fit this headset with such a beastly display. In order to keep the price low compared to the Apple Vision Pro, we’re sure that Samsung will keep the resolution lower. In any case, we’re sure that the display will be beautiful regardless, as Samsung tends to offer amazing displays.

Price and launch

Samsung didn’t reveal any information about this headset’s price, but we know that it’s looking to compete with the Apple Vision Pro. To refresh your memory, Apple’s headset set you back $3,499. That, while typical of Apple’s pricing, was absurd. We’re sure that Samsung’s headset won’t be that high, but don’t expect it to be cheap.

As for availability, previous reports point to this device launching sometime in March 2025. That seems likely, but keep your fingers crossed. If that report is true, then Samsung released a test version of the headset to developers just two months ago. So, it seems that the testing phase is now underway, and there’s no telling how long that will take.

In any case, it’ll be exciting to see what Samsung has in store for us. This will be the company’s answer to the Vision Pro, and it may breathe life into this market.
