Three Arrested As Soldiers Attack Police Patrol Team

Soldiers on duty

Three personnel of the Nigerian Army have been arrested following an attack on police officers on duty along the Shao–Malete Expressway in Kwara State.

A situation report from the Shao Police Unit said the incident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. on December 23, 2025, when a police patrol team intercepted two motorcycles along the route.

According to the report, three occupants, later identified as soldiers, disembarked from the motorcycles and confronted the policemen, attempting to disarm and physically assault them.

One of the officers, PC Abdulganiyu Abdullateef, sustained injuries during the confrontation.

“The patrol team quickly called for reinforcement from the division, but before the backup team arrived at the scene, the three army personnel had fled,” the report stated.

The police said one Saka Suleiman, a resident of Shao who rode one of the motorcycles, was arrested at the scene.

“During investigation, he identified one of the fleeing soldiers as Saka Jamiu, a native of Shao,” the report added.

Following a manhunt, police operatives arrested the remaining suspects in the early hours of December 24, 2025.

At about 1:00 a.m., the remaining suspects — Atunwa Adekunle, Ishola Awolola and Saka Jamiu — all male natives of Shao and members of the Nigerian Army, were successfully arrested,” the report said.

Police also recovered a dagger knife from the suspects during the operation.

According to Sahara Reporters, the report noted that arrangements are underway to transfer the arrested soldiers to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Ilorin for further discreet investigation.

The police assured that appropriate action would be taken against the suspects upon the conclusion of investigations.
