It can be affirmed that Nigeria’s dominance has been evident, thanks to decisive performances from players who rose to the occasion when it mattered most—World Cup qualifiers and AFCON campaigns.

While Rwanda has often shown resilience and promise, the Super Eagles’ attacking quality have repeatedly made the difference.

Below, we look back at three memorable occasions when Nigeria secured victory against the Amavubi.

June 5, 2004 – World Cup Qualifier: Nigeria 2–0 Rwanda (Abuja)

Nigeria kicked off their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a comfortable 2–0 victory at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

Obafemi Martins was the hero of the day, scoring twice in the second half—once just after the hour mark and again in the 88th minute.

The brace sealed all three points for coach Christian Chukwu’s side, which stamped a strong start in front of the home crowd.

June 16, 2012 – Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier: Nigeria 2–0 Rwanda (Calabar)

Eight years later, the two sides met again in a qualifier for the 2013 AFCON tournament. Playing in Calabar under coach Stephen Keshi, Nigeria delivered another 2–0 victory.

March 21, 2025 – World Cup Qualifier: Rwanda 0–2 Nigeria (Kigali)

Most recently, the Super Eagles travelled to Kigali for a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier and secured a commanding 2–0 away win.

Victor Osimhen broke down Rwanda’s resistance with clinical finishing. The victory reaffirmed Nigeria’s superiority in the head-to-head battle and slightly boosted their standing in Group C as they chase a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

Nigeria vs Rwanda: Can they Do It Again

The clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo today has been described as a do-or-die battle for Eric Chelle’s men, as they aim to secure their World Cup ticket after missing out on the 2022 edition.

Chelle has called on key players such as Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, and others, who will be fighting tooth and nail to secure victory.

Nigeria currently sit fourth in the group with nine points, trailing the leaders. Having held the upper hand in their recent meetings with Rwanda, the Super Eagles will be desperate to extend that dominance in Uyo.
