Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has said the recent visa restrictions imposed by the United States on individuals linked to terrorism in Nigeria are a direct result of the government’s failure to act decisively against terror sponsors.
In a statement on Friday, Frank commended U.S. President, Donald Trump, and the U.S. Congress for introducing the policy, describing it as a necessary step to pressure Nigerian authorities into greater accountability.
Frank praised the policy as a welcome development and a reflection of America’s commitment to global security.
“Their intervention has exposed what our own leaders have refused to confront and has given Nigerians renewed hope that this nightmare can end,” he said.
He added that the restrictions have compelled the Nigerian government to revisit long-ignored concerns about terror financing and the lack of transparency in its handling of security issues.
The activist criticised Nigerian authorities for failing to publish the list of terror financiers allegedly identified by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in previous investigations.
He accused the government of succumbing to political interference and corruption, which he said have stalled the prosecution of those behind the country’s insecurity.
“Let it be clearly stated: if President Trump had not stepped in, Nigeria’s leaders would still be looking the other way,” Frank declared.
Frank also advised the U.S. to be cautious in sharing sensitive intelligence with Nigerian officials until there is full public disclosure of the reported list of terror sponsors and evidence of genuine efforts to bring them to justice.
He insisted that Nigeria has the capacity to tackle insecurity but lacks the political will, due to entrenched corruption and vested interests.
