President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), on the occasion of his 83rd birthday, lauding his enduring commitment to Nigeria’s peace, democratic stability, and nation-building.
In a statement released on Saturday, June 15, 2025, the President described General Abubakar as “a patriot of uncommon integrity” whose influence has helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey and whose leadership continues to command national and international respect.
“I celebrate the 83rd birthday of former Head of State and elder statesman, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd),” President Tinubu said. “I salute him for his decades of exceptional service to Nigeria, both in uniform and in retirement, and commend his steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and good governance across the African continent.”
President Tinubu praised the former military leader’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s transition to democratic rule in 1999, calling it a “watershed moment” in the nation’s history.
“General Abubakar’s legacy, particularly his role in leading Nigeria through a peaceful transition to democratic rule in 1999, remains a watershed moment in the nation’s history. His selfless act of handing over power paved the way for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and strengthened the principle of constitutional democracy,” the President noted.
Abubakar, who served as Head of State from June 1998 to May 1999 following the sudden death of General Sani Abacha, is widely credited with overseeing a relatively swift and smooth handover to a civilian administration—a rarity on the continent at the time.
Beyond his tenure in office, Abubakar has remained a prominent voice in national affairs, notably as Chairman of the National Peace Committee. President Tinubu highlighted this role as crucial in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy through dialogue, conflict resolution, and credible elections.
“As Chairman of the National Peace Committee, General Abubakar has continued to play a significant role in promoting dialogue, defusing tension, and ensuring credible electoral processes in Nigeria. His voice of moderation, reason, and statesmanship is deeply valued in a time where unity and leadership are more critical than ever,” Tinubu stated.
Political leaders and civil society groups across the country have also joined in celebrating the elder statesman, with many echoing President Tinubu’s sentiments about Abubakar’s stabilising presence and moral authority.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, in a separate congratulatory message, described Abubakar as “a pillar of peace and conscience of the nation.”
President Tinubu concluded his tribute by extending prayers and good wishes to the former leader: “As he marks another year of life, Nigeria honours his sacrifices, wisdom, and unyielding devotion to the peace and unity of our great nation. I wish the former Head of State continued strength, good health, and divine grace in the years ahead.”
General Abdulsalami Abubakar, a native of Niger State, remains one of Nigeria’s most revered military leaders and statesmen. His birthday is being marked quietly in his Minna home, with close family members and dignitaries expected to visit in the coming days.
