Tinubu confers post-humous CFR honour on late COAS Lagbaja

This announcement was made during a burial ceremony held in honor of the late general at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja.

The President lauded Lagbaja for his exemplary service and significant contributions to national security, calling his appointment as COAS one of his best decisions.

“As a lasting tribute, I have granted the late Chief of Army Staff ...humous national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR),” Tinubu stated. He then invited Lagbaja’s widow, Mariya, to accept the award on behalf of the family, to applause from those in attendance.

Tinubu encouraged military personnel, saying, “Let us not allow death to defeat us. Hold your heads high in memory of your army chief.” He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the brave members of the armed forces who defend the nation.

The President expressed gratitude to the Lagbaja family for allowing the late COAS to serve with honor, noting that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker, the Defence Minister, governors, and high-ranking military officials.

Last week, President Tinubu announced Lagbaja’s passing, revealing that he died in Lagos after a period of illness.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lagbaja served as Chief of Army Staff for one year and four months after his appointment by Tinubu in June 2023.

He played crucial roles in several internal security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States.
