The Federal Government has announced that it has secured about ₦250 billion in funding to support the development of light rail projects in Kaduna and Kano states.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this during a World Press Conference in Abuja on Monday.
Idris stressed that President Bola Tinubu‘s administration is determined to drive development across all regions, insisting that no part of the country is being sidelined in the distribution of capital projects.
“Contrary to the perception being pushed at some quarters, this administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to balanced and inclusive development since assuming office. The distribution of capital projects under President Bola Tinubu is equitable. No zone is taking a back seat,” he said.
According to the minister, ₦150 billion has been secured for the Kano light rail project, while ₦100 billion will be allocated to Kaduna State.
He explained that the Federal Government’s intervention was aimed at supporting states with critical infrastructure projects that would accelerate growth and improve transportation.
“The Federal Government is actively going further to support various subnational infrastructure projects, for instance the light rail projects in Kano and Kaduna States, for which funding to the tune of ₦150 billion and ₦100 billion respectively has been secured,” Idris stated.
The minister also revealed that President Tinubu is committed to ensuring financial autonomy for local government areas, describing them as catalysts for grassroots growth and development.
“Local Government Areas are also being fiscally reintegrated as catalysts for growth and development, with the financial autonomy that the President is determined to fully make operational,” he added.
Idris further noted that state governments now receive significantly higher allocations from the federation account, following the removal of fuel subsidy.
“Thanks to the increased headroom from the oil subsidy removal, the sub-national governments are now able to do a lot more and with less debt,” he said.
The Kaduna and Kano light rail projects are expected to ease urban transportation, attract investment, and create jobs in the two North-West states once completed.
