Former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has accused President Bola Tinubu of rewarding governors who mismanage and divert public funds for personal gain.

Lukman made the allegation during an interview where he criticised the president for continually approving large sums of money to sub-national governments, even when there is clear evidence that some governors fail to utilise the substantial federal allocations for the development of their states.

The United States Embassy in Nigeria, on Tuesday, released a report highlighting how governors are spending billions on renovating government houses, despite the economic hardship caused by the removal of petrol subsidy.

Lukman said, “Yes, the president has said the right thing, but what is he doing to ensure that governors do what they need to do?”

Lukman, a member of the opposition coalition formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), further accused the 36 governors of becoming arrogant and unaccountable to the people due to their control over party structures.
