Tinubu making courageous decisions to fix Nigeria’s economy – VP Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making bold and essential decisions aimed at building an economy that truly works for the Nigerian people.

Speaking on Wednesday at the 15th Mechanical Engineering Distinguished Lecture (MEDL) held at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the Vice President likened the administration’s approach to the precision of engineering.

“President Tinubu is himself a man of numbers — an accountant extraordinaire, grounded in evidence and driven by facts. He understands that Nigeria cannot move forward without accurate measurement of its revenues, deficits, and prospects,” Shettima stated.

Shettima stressed that the Tinubu administration is not budgeting for survival, but for transformation, and a deliberate shift towards productivity, sustainability, and prosperity.

“From ending the long-standing fuel subsidy regime to confronting the nation’s worrying debt-to-revenue ratio, these are not decisions of convenience but of courage,” he added.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Senator Iyiola Omisore discussed Nigeria’s potential in key sectors like energy, oil and gas, infrastructure, and healthcare, urging the government and stakeholders to harness these opportunities for sustainable development.

Chief Bisi Akande, Chairman of the event, reiterated the vital role of engineering in national development and encouraged professionals to embrace digital innovation to remain competitive.

Representing the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Kashim Abdul Ali stressed the need for optimal resource use and engineering expertise to navigate current economic challenges.

Engr. Alhassan Mohammed, National Chairman of NIMechE, called for deeper reflection on embedding engineering solutions into Nigeria’s national development agenda.

Dignitaries at the event included the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola; Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako; and former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, among others.
