WATCH THE VIDEO HERE PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kassim Shettima met today with governors from the 36 states of the Federation and ministries to discuss a new minimum wage for workers in the country, as well as other economic issues. The President and governors gathered at the 141st meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), which was held in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Prior to the President’s arrival, the Vice President conducted a meeting with state governors, deputy governors, and ministers. Today’s meeting comes two days after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) postponed a minimum wage review memo to allow for additional consultations. Yesterday, governors from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened in Abuja to assure Nigerians that ongoing negotiations between the government, the private sector, and organised labour will result in better pay. In his Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, the President told the Organised Labour that an executive law on the new national minimum wage for workers would be forwarded to the National Assembly for approval. The President is expected to decide on the government and business sector’s ₦62,000 proposal, as well as Labour’s ₦250,000 demand.
