PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to late business magnate and philanthropist Aminu Dantata, describing him as a national icon whose life was marked by integrity, humility, and selfless service.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the Dantata family in Kano today, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the elder statesman’s passing in June at the age of 94.
“We have lost a titan — the conscience of our country,” the President said in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga. “May Allah, in His infinite mercy, grant him Aljannah Firdaus.”
President Tinubu described Dantata as a man whose legacy was rooted in philanthropy, public service, and compassion for others.
“This visit is personal. Dantata wasn’t just a respected leader; he was part of my family,” Tinubu said.
Reflecting on a personal memory, the President recalled meeting Dantata before the 2023 elections to seek his blessings. Instead of waiting for a follow-up visit, Dantata travelled to Abuja to show support.
“That’s who he was — simple, sincere, and generous,” Tinubu added.
He further praised Dantata’s lifelong commitment to helping others:
“If goodwill exists in the afterlife, Dantata would still be found feeding the hungry and comforting the sick. His service to Nigeria was boundless.”
Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the Dantata family, the government and people of Kano State, and Nigerians at large.
Dantata, a respected figure in Nigeria’s business community and a committed humanitarian, was laid to rest on July 1 at Baqiyya Cemetery in Madina, Saudi Arabia.
The funeral drew dignitaries from across the country.
He was widely known for his philanthropic efforts, including a ₦1.5 billion donation to flood victims in Borno State in 2024.
He was also the uncle of Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote.
