President Bola Tinubu is deeply troubled by the unending killings in Plateau State and across Nigeria, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio said on Saturday, declaring that the violence has left both the government and the nation in pain.
Speaking at the Jos Polo Field during the formal reception of political defectors into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, Akpabio said the President is determined to restore peace and ensure the security of residents.
“I cry whenever I hear the killing of a human being, whether a child or an adult,” Akpabio said, representing Tinubu at the event.
“A lot of blood has been shed, and we are not happy. The President of Nigeria is equally not happy.”
Akpabio insisted that lasting peace cannot come from external intervention but must be achieved through collective commitment from Nigerians themselves.
“It is not people outside that will come and give you peace. It is we who must bring peace. We must live in peace with one another. Nigeria must have peace for progress to come,” he declared.
The Senate President assured Plateau residents that the President has directed the federal government to intensify efforts in ending violence in the state.
“Let me assure the people of Plateau State that your concerns are going to be addressed,” he said.
Akpabio traced much of the current insecurity to earlier waves of violence, noting that many of the international reports being cited today are based on events recorded over a decade ago.
“The whole thing started in 2010. Most of the reports you are hearing about that they are using internationally were reports prepared in 2010. At that time, I was a governor, and I know how people were killed everywhere,” he said.
He added that although the scale of killings, displacement and destruction cannot be denied, the government is committed to reversing the trend.
Akpabio said the government recognises the suffering of the people and has renewed its commitment to restoring peace and stability not only in Plateau but across the country.
“We will do everything possible to ensure you have peace,” he said.
He stressed that anyone who aspires to govern Plateau must prioritise peace. “Anybody that will rule Plateau must be committed to peace. This is the only party that cares for you,” Akpabio added.
The Senate President urged residents to support President Tinubu and the APC, saying more development would come to the state through cooperation with the government at the centre.
He maintained that national progress is tied to peace and unity, which all citizens must embrace.
