Tinubu reaffirms commitment to armed forces’ welfare

Speaking today at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new defence complex and the inauguration of an army barracks named after him in Abuja, the President lauded the efforts of the armed forces under the leadership of General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff.

“This event marks the beginning of a new construction project and underscores our renewed dedication to supporting the military and safeguarding our democratic values. As Commander-in-Chief, I pledge my unwavering support to our troops and their families,” Tinubu stated, according to a release from his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

President Tinubu further emphasized his vision of building a professional and well-equipped military under his administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

He commended the armed forces for their courage, dedication, and resilience in defending Nigeria’s peace and development against adversarial forces.

On the new Defence Complex, Tinubu described it as a symbol of the nation’s respect and admiration for the armed forces, promising that the facility, once completed, would become a national monument and a hub of excellence.

He also highlighted the importance of locally producing military equipment to strengthen domestic defence capabilities.

Tinubu announced the successful assembly of locally-produced Tactical Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Vehicles and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), calling them a testament to Nigeria’s progress in defence technology.

He noted that these advancements, achieved through collaborations between the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, the Command Engineering Depot, and private firms like EPAIL and ProForce, would enhance both operational efficiency and the nation’s economy.

The President urged Nigerians to unite in building a brighter future, noting the significance of the groundbreaking event, which coincided with the Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

He assured that the first phase of the defence complex would be completed within his administration’s tenure.

Earlier, the Chief of Defence Staff explained the need for a modern facility, highlighting that the current Garki headquarters was initially intended as a temporary office and is now inadequate.

He noted that the new complex would serve as a beacon of excellence and modernization for the armed forces.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed gratitude to the President for his continued support, pledging the loyalty and commitment of the armed forces to the nation.

Dignitaries present at the event included Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Honourable Tajuddeen Abbas, Senator Ahmad Lawan, Minister of Defence Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, Minister of Information Mohammed Idris Malagi, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, service chiefs, and senior members of the military hierarchy.
