PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has approved a second five-year term for Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
The reappointment, announced today by the State House, extends Marwa’s leadership of the agency until 2031.
Marwa, first appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021, previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.
His reappointment was confirmed in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
A seasoned military officer, Marwa is a graduate of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy.
Commissioned in 1973 as a second lieutenant, he served in various high-level capacities including brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Theophilus Danjuma, and academic registrar of the NDA.
His diplomatic experience includes postings as Deputy Defence Adviser at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington, DC, and later as Defence Adviser to Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
Marwa also holds two postgraduate degrees—a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.
The presidency highlighted his achievements at the NDLEA, noting major drug interceptions, the arrest of about 73,000 drug couriers and kingpins, and the seizure of more than 15 million kilogrammes of assorted illicit drugs.
The agency has also intensified public awareness campaigns nationwide under his leadership.
President Tinubu commended Marwa’s work, describing the reappointment as “a vote of confidence” in his commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse. .
He urged him to continue targeting drug networks that threaten the nation, especially its youth.
A former military governor of Lagos and Borno states, Marwa is now tasked with consolidating the NDLEA’s progress as he begins his second tenure, which will run until 2031.
