The subsidy phase-out, which he announced during his swearing-in ceremony in May 2023, led to significant increases in fuel prices, sparking protests and criticism from those who argue it has caused severe hardship for many Nigerians. During a recent visit to Enugu State, Tinubu defended the decision, asserting it was crucial for a better Nigeria. “You are all part of one large family called Nigeria, living in different rooms of the same house. We must build this house to meet our immediate needs and those of future generations. That’s why ending the subsidy was necessary,” Tinubu stated at a stakeholders meeting in Enugu today. “You cannot spend the future of generations yet unborn in advance. Don’t bankrupt the nation before they arrive. I understand that people will criticize and oppose me, but I asked for this responsibility. I believe in myself, and I know I can assemble a strong team to build our nation.” President Bola Tinubu arrived at Enugu airport for a working visit to inaugurate various state government projects, welcomed by H.E. Peter Mbah, the Executive Governor of Enugu State. Tinubu urged Nigerians to embrace their country and refrain from negative remarks about it. “This is our country. We need to work hard to create a nation we can be proud of. I won’t accept negative narratives about Nigeria. I’m very proud of our nation, and you should be too,” he conveyed to attendees, which included Governor Peter Mbah and other dignitaries. Among the projects inaugurated during his visit to Enugu State were the multi-functional Enugu International Conference Centre and a state-of-the-art command and control center, complete with 150 patrol vehicles equipped with AI surveillance cameras.
