President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has relieved Nkiruka Madueke of her duties as Director-General of the Nigeria Climate Change Council (NCCC), less than a year after her appointment in June 2024.

In a swift replacement, Tinubu has appointed climate finance expert Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the Council. The announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement issued by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC),” the statement read.

The president commended Madueke for laying the foundation of the council during her brief tenure, recognizing her contributions to Nigeria’s evolving climate governance structure.

Mrs. Majekodunmi is said to bring over 17 years of experience in climate finance, renewable energy, carbon markets, and international climate governance. Before her elevation, she served as the Council’s Financial Adviser, where she played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policy and global engagements.

Mr. Onanuga added that the new appointment highlights the Tinubu administration’s unwavering commitment to tackling climate change, framing it as a strategic priority for Nigeria’s economic development, national security, and inclusive growth.
