President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to screen and confirm the newly appointed service chiefs.
Naijaonpoint gathered that the request was contained in a letter read on Tuesday by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary.
According to the letter, the Service Chiefs are Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Waheedi Shaibu; Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas; Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke and Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye
Akpabio subsequently referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for screening and confirmation next week.
The request comes a day after the presidency confirmed that Tinubu held a closed-door meeting with the newly appointed service chiefs at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
A statement issued by the presidency said the discussions centred on national security priorities and strategic defence coordination.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday received the newly nominated Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting marked the President’s first official engagement with the new military leadership team, as discussions focused on national security priorities and strategic defence coordination,” the statement read.
The new service chiefs were appointed last Friday in a shake-up of the military hierarchy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
